Families are an important part of a student’s development. Traditional, non-traditional, biological, foster, or adoptive families provide vital support throughout students’ lives, including during the transition to adulthood.
However, transition outcomes associated with traditional employment, postsecondary education, and independent living may not always align with the values that historically marginalized families consider most important.
The goal of this module is to explore the unique strengths and challenges encountered when supporting families during transition, and to provide a framework for enhancing collaboration, overcoming barriers, and increasing family-professional partnerships.
Topics covered in this module include:
- Understanding how family systems are organized and operate
- Problems of inequitable transition outcomes
- Experiences of historically marginalized families during transition planning
- Culturally sustaining practices in your professional context
- Student and family community and cultural assets and how they can be recognized
- Diversity-informed resource mapping
- The Community Cultural Wealth Framework
