Getting ready for college can feel overwhelming, especially when navigating it with a disability. In this session, we’ll focus on preparing for your college journey while you’re still in high school. Our panel of students and experts will share insights on finding the right schools, understanding your rights, applying for accommodations, and making the transition from high school support systems to college resources. Learn practical tips on how to advocate for yourself, ask the right questions, and set yourself up for success from day one.
Training Objectives:
- Equip students with strategies to identify and choose colleges that align with their academic, personal, and accessibility needs.
- Provide a clear understanding of disability rights under laws like the ADA and Section 504, including how to apply for accommodations and advocate for support.
- Highlight the differences between high school IEP/504 plans and college accommodations, and share tips on finding and accessing campus-based disability services.
- Empower students to build self-advocacy skills by learning how to ask the right questions, communicate needs effectively, and navigate challenges independently.

Candence (Cady) Russell
Candence “Cady” Russell is from Austin Texas and is in her senior year at Daemen University in New York studying Environmental Science with minors in history, biology, chemistry, and global and local sustainability. She has been a Group Leader with the Youth Engagement Transition Initiative (YETI) since 2021, Diversity Ambassador with Daemen University's Center for Diversity and Inclusion since 2022, Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society since 2023.

Everett Deibler, M.A., obtained his degree in Special Education and Human Development from George Washington University. Prior to joining J. Badger Consulting, he spent five plus years as a Learning Specialist at Lehigh Carbon Community College, where he led initiatives to promote accessibility, diversity, equity, inclusion, and disability sensitivity. Everett has over 10 years of experience in facilitating programs and discussions on the local, state, and national level around youth engagement, competitive integrated employment, person-centered approaches, inclusion, disability awareness and sensitivity.

Holden Boully is a high school senior from Minot, North Dakota who will be graduating this winter and exploring a health profession career. He is a representative for the North Dakota POV program and is an active member of NTACT:C Youth Engagement Transition Iniative.

Jenifer Montag, Ed.D., NIC, CRC is the Associate Director of the National Center for College Students with Disabilities (NCCSD). Prior to starting at the NCCSD, she directed, facilitated, and managed college disability services in a large doctoral university, a large community college, and at two medium-sized community colleges. She has presented nationally on the topic of accessibility and continues to teach college classes, especially loving the First Year Experience class and making sure new college students know resources they can use.

Michael Stoehr M.S., is a Knowledge Development and Technical Assistance Specialist with the National Technical Assistance Center on Transition: the Collaborative (NTACT:C). He has worked in the special education field for the past 39 years and has extensive experience in the areas of secondary transition, assessment, job analysis, supported and customized employment, transition communities of practice, effective transition planning, inter-agency collaboration, transition practices for students with complex support needs, family engagement, and youth leadership and self-advocacy.

Michelle Mitchell M.Ed, CRC, earned an M.Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling from Penn State University and has been in the profession for over 23 years. Seeing the inequity of opportunities for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Michelle has endeavored to change opportunities by changing the way our culture interprets disability and championing liberation. Through this work, Michelle has developed sustainable relationships opening the doors of inclusion across many campuses, 2 year and 4 year alike. With over 17 years at Lehigh Carbon Community College as a Disability Learning Specialist and various community connections, Michelle has collaborated on a number of projects to open doors of equity across her community.
